Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to pay Make It Cheaper to find me savings?
Make it Cheaper offers customers a free energy comparison service to identify energy savings for your home or business.
Will my gas or electricity supply change?
No, the company that physically supplies your gas or electricity will not change, they are known as the distributor and they look after the maintenance and reliability of the electricity. Only your retailer may change, the retailer is the company that bills you.
If there is a fault will it be handled differently if I change energy retailers?
No, all faults are treated equally and are handled by the distributor who manages the network.
Do I have to have a contract?
Yes, typically there are two types of energy contracts available: standing contracts and market retail contracts, however for the majority of retailers, there are $0 or very small early termination fees if you want to exit the contract at any stage.
Market contracts are almost always cheaper than the default offer, so it pays to review your energy rates every 2 years to ensure you stay on a competitive rate.
What is a default offer?
The Default Market Offer (DMO) is a regulated energy price set by the government if you are not on a market contract with your retailer. Since 1 July 2019, the DMO replaced previous standing offers set by retailers for energy customers in New South Wales, South East Queensland and South Australia.
A similar regulated price called the Victorian Default Offer (VDO) is set by the Victorian government for energy customers in that state from the same date.
Does the DMO protect me from paying too much?
Although the DMO is a good initiative from the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) it is there to provide a safety net rather than provide the most competitive plans in market. Find out more about the 2021 DMO here
What is a market retail contract?
These are energy plans offered by retailers to new and existing customers for a set contracted period. They will usually have lower rates and discounts than a standing contract, hence offer better savings for customers.
In general, energy customers are better off most of the time by shopping around for a competitive market offer instead of remaining on a default market offer.
